International Epilepsy Day 2023

History of International Epilepsy Day

International Epilepsy Day is the idea of two organizations namely, the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) and International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE). These two organizations have been organizing various campaigns and events since the inception of the day to guide people about the conditions and their effects. The day is celebrated with a unique theme every year. It is observed in over 120 countries across the globe.

This is a day for everyone, no matter where you are, no matter how small your group or large your area, and no matter whether you focus on the medical or the social aspects of the disease. We want you to help us celebrate International Epilepsy Day! Let’s speak with one global voice.

The Day is a joint initiative by the International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE) and the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE).

How to Observe International Epilepsy Day 2023?

Epilepsy can be observed in many ways, such as:

  • By participating in an event – There are several events that are organized all around the world to enhance epilepsy awareness. You can be a part of one such event near you and get educated about the disease and also share thoughts.

  • Make donations – On International Epilepsy Day, you can also donate or raise funds to support organizations. This way, they can support these organizations to further the cause of epilepsy and accelerate treatment for seizures.

  • Show support by wearing purple – Since purple is the color of epilepsy for official awareness, one can add a splash of purple somewhere on their body on International Epilepsy Day in the form of attire, nail polish or anything else.

Epilepsy is a condition that affects every aspect of the life of people suffering from it. In fact, the stigma that is attached to epilepsy in society makes it more difficult for people to deal with rather than the disease itself. Further, the various misconceptions surrounding the disease deteriorate the situation all the more. International Epilepsy Day is a step towards dismissing these myths.

Unless people are educated and informed about this condition and its facts, the myths will never cease to exist. Hence, it is important to spread awareness so that the stigma or discrimination that is faced by epilepsy patients comes to an end.
