Take control of diabetes today

Over 450 million adults are estimated to have diabetes, a lifelong condition. The symptoms of diabetes are not always obvious, half of the people with the disease do not know they have it, and risk developing serious health problems as a result. And yet, once diagnosed, diabetes can be treated and people with the disease can expect to live a full, healthy and active life – provided they manage their health well.

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a serious chronic disease that occurs when your body cannot properly produce or use insulin, the hormone that moves glucose from the food you eat into your cells where it can be used for energy. This results in high blood glucose levels that can damage your body over time.

There are three main types of diabetes:

  1. Type 1 diabetes results from the pancreas' failure to produce enough insulin due to the loss of beta cells. Type 1 diabetes develops rapidly and is usually diagnosed in childhood.

  2. Type 2 diabetes begins with insulin resistance, a condition in which cells fail to respond to insulin properly. Type 2 diabetes usually starts around middle age and progresses gradually. You may not even know you have the disease until other health problems appear.

  3. Gestational diabetes is the third main form and occurs when pregnant women without a previous history of diabetes develop high blood sugar levels.
